Information for Children and Families

Overview
Sunflowers is a home from home where you and your child can be assured of a warm welcome. Your child will be given their own bright and sunny room, decorated in a child friendly way. We would encourage you to bring in your child’s own toys and possessions from home.

We employ a team of nurses and carers, who are trained to a very high standard, to look after your child. We also have links with local educational provision.

We recognise that you are the expert in your child’s care and we will plan your child’s care alongside you. This will be reviewed on a regular basis as your child’s needs change.

We work alongside key people to ensure a speedy, safe and appropriate discharge with the aim of children going home at the earliest opportunity.

Our dedicated team of nurses and carers are committed to making sure that your child’s stay with us is a happy and positive experience.

Referrals
Sunflowers accepts referrals from parents as well as healthcare professionals or social workers. If you have any questions about a referral please do not hesitate to speak to either Lucy or Karen.

You can view and print or download the Referral Form here: Referral Form.pdf

We will consider children/young people under the age of 19, who have complex health needs. Unfortunately we cannot accept children/young people with primarily behavioural or communication disorders as we are not experts in this field. We aim to assess a child/young person within a week of receiving the referral using our detailed admissions criteria. Any child who fits these criteria will be considered for a place at Sunflowers, funding permitting.

Funding
There are various ways to finance your child’s stay at Sunflowers and we’re happy to advise you on payment and funding options. Please contact us for further information.

Staff
Staff at Sunflowers receive robust and in depth training before being able to care for the children and are carefully chosen to fit in with the Sunflowers ethos of treating children with respect, dignity and a sense of fun. There will be a trained nurse and carer(s) on each shift. The nurses all have extensive experience of caring for children with complex needs and the carers have fulfilled a comprehensive training package.

Medical Support
There is local GP cover and a visiting Paediatrician. We have strong links with Addenbrookes Hospital but children will remain under the care of any Consultant from whom they are still receiving care.

Education
Sunflowers liaises with local schools for advice and support in order to facilitate appropriate education for your child. Education may be accessed in school or on an outreach basis.

Play
We provide a fun and stimulating environment for children in which they can develop and feel happy and secure. We also engage a play therapist to assist in play planning for each child. Sunflowers aims to enable children to live ordinary lives in extraordinary circumstances. We will make sure that your child is offered access to a variety of experiences which will enrich and educate.

Mealtimes
Mealtimes are structured as if at home, with children in the dining room whenever possible. At weekends there may be more flexibility. All dietary requirements are catered for including the safe delivery of enteral and parenteral feeds.

Bedtimes
We believe children feel safest and most secure when they are given a structured routine agreed between the child, parent and staff which will include a reasonable bedtime. We are happy to use any comfort strategies used at home. Staff will monitor the children regularly during the night.

Visitors
Members of the family can visit at any time. If there are any special instructions please discuss with the team in advance.

Further information
More information will be available once your child is assessed as being able to stay at Sunflowers.

Our Facilities

Sunflowers is an adapted Victorian house on Cottenham High Street designed to provide all the comforts of home combined with accessibility and safety for wheelchair users and those with complex health needs.

Downstairs there is a lounge, dining room, modern kitchen, therapy room/sensory room and an office. There is also a shower room with electrical changing bench and toilet.

Upstairs are 4 large bedrooms which can accommodate parents and/or siblings if necessary. We have a large wetroom with a height adjustable, multi-sensory bath for those with less mobility. There is also a staff room on this floor so the nurse and carer are close by overnight.

Outside we have parking for 7 cars including a large disabled space. There is a lovely, sunny private garden area at the rear of the house and we have the use of a generous neighbour’s large garden.

We consulted with a Paediatric Occupational Therapist during the conversion and as a result installed overhead tracking thought the house, up and downstairs, to assist with mobility. We also worked closely alongside the local building inspector and fire safety officer and obtained advice from CQC regarding the work in order to get it just right for the children and families.
